Joseph Haydn

The Seven Last Words

A masterful multi-movement work centered around the seven expressions attributed to Jesus Christ during his crucifixion. The work was originally commissioned in1786 for the Good Friday service at Holy Cave Oratory in Cádiz, Spain where it was performed by candlelight.

It interestingly exists as three versions. Aside from the original 1786 orchestral version, the work was adapted by Haydn in 1787 for string quartet with the addition of an Introduction and a musical Earthquake conclusion. In 1796, the work was reworked by the composer as an oratorio for full orchestra, chorus, and soloists. Haydn enlisted the assistance of the nobleman Baron Gottfried van Swieten who provided the libretto. Haydn further added an Interlude movement for winds and brass.

Regal Ensemble performs its own unique arrangement of this masterpiece utilizing all versions to fit our nine-piece ensemble. We use the 1787 string quartet instrumentation; we add the double bass part from the original 1786 orchestral version; and the Regal vocal quartet sings the chorus and solo parts from the 1796 oratorio version. Finally, all musical movements are performed in their entirety with the added Introduction, the Interlude arranged for string quintet, and the famous Earthquake finale.
